Hidden Creek is situated in the beautiful rugged high altitude hills of Queensland’s Granite Belt at over 900 metres above sea level which is unique in Queensland.
Roughly 225 million years ago, powerful acts of nature created the foundations for our dramatic landscape. Major earth movements rocked eastern Australia between 200 and 400 million years ago. The continent collided with an oceanic plate and ocean sediments were thrust from off-shore into the area south of the Granite Belt. This ancient sediment is known as traprock or bedrock. From the depths of the earth, hot molten rock called magma was forced upwards and invaded the traprock layer. Cooling slowly, the liquid magma solidified to form granite. Over millions of years, nature’s forces combined to erode the traprock, revealing the bare granite below.
The Granite Belt has warm summers and bitterly cold winters. This climate, together with the arid granite rocky soils, draws similar comparisons to high regions close to the Mediterranean. Areas such as north-eastern Spain, the inland south-west of France around Cahors and Gaillac, and the upper Rhone Valley in France, bear a great resemblance to our Granite Belt terrain. These regions have a tradition of unique characterful wines that are wonderful accompaniments to food.
At Hidden Creek we have adopted the grape varieties and inspiration of these regions. The outcome of our vineyard site, climate and culture produces wines that taste unique to our region. The people of France call this “Terroir” but there may just be an Indigenous term for this concept to explain why a wine has a certain taste not just because of the variety and vineyard management but because of its place. When we find that term we will let you know!
Our “Top” block is planted out to mostly Shiraz with a small section of Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery block is planted to Shiraz and the Road block is planted to Tempranillo and Viognier.
